A Bay Area native since 2002, mezzo-soprano Katherine Growdon has performed with several of its local opera companies, including San Francisco Lyric Opera, Pocket Opera, Berkeley Opera, and Oakland Opera. Roles performed include: Cherubino (Le Nozze di Figaro), Idamante (Idomeneo), Nicklausse (Tales of Hoffman), Baba the
Turk (Rake’s Progress), Nefertiti (Akhnaten), Count Orsini (Lucrezia Borgia), Mércédes (Carmen), Meg Page (Falstaff), Third Lady (The Magic Flute), Hansel (Hansel and Gretel), Juno (Semele), La Ciesca (Gianni Schicchi).
She has appeared as an alto soloist with the Oakland Symphony Chorus in Bach’s Magnificat, with the UC Berkeley Chorus in the Matthäuspassion and Elijah, and with the San Francisco Conservatory of Music in the Johannes-Passion as well as at Davies Symphony Hall in the annual Sing-it-yourself-Messiah. This past spring she performed Berg’s Sieben frühe Lieder with the New Music Ensemble as part of the Blueprint Concert Series.
Ms. Growdon placed third last June in the American Bach Soloists Henry Goldberg International Young Artists Competition, in which her performance of Bach’s “Vergnügte Ruh, beliebte Seelenlust” (BWV 170) was praised for its “heartrending emotion, and excellent control” as well as for her display of “true passion” (San Francisco Classical Voice).
